Tips on Exploring in NY

Based on my experience in NY, I found several things handy—especially if I was exploring the city on my own.

iPhone/smart phone: handy for when you need to get somewhere or to kill time while waiting in lines
iPhone/smart phone charger: handy when the battery runs low
NY subway transit map in an app
umbrella: just in case it rains
cash: for restaurants that only take this as a form of payment
good walking shoes
a daily itinerary to keep your feet happy (and not walking aimlessly)
a book you've been meaning to read: handy if you don't want to use your phone to keep you from boredom

Free or Cheap Things to do in NY

Here are a few things, that I found during my trip, to do in New York for visitors on a budget. If you plan out some of the tourist stuff in advance and or pick and choose your activities, you can cover a good amount in a short span of time.

Suggested Donations

- American Museum of Modern History

- Metropolitan Museum of Art

- Bronx Zoo (Wednesdays)

Free (usually a specific time/day)

- Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Tuesday and Saturday, unless there is a special event)

- MoMa (Fridays from 4-8pm)

- Staten Island Ferry (see Statue of Liberty)

- Ground Zero site

- Grand Central station

- Central Park (or any park)

By no means should this be your end-all list of things to do while in NY. Go with what interests you.

For food, there's tons of options. I have been told to set aside a good budget for eating in NY. The average meal a New Yorker may spend at lunch is around $15-30, and dinner a bit more. I am not saying they eat out all the time, but often they eat a full course meal with dessert. Of course there are some good cheap eats, and here are some that you can consider if you're trying to stretch your dollars:

- The Halal Guys (food cart, big portions—could split it into two meals for girls, get the combo. $6)

- Bagels (Yelp the local bakeries. Good on the go, filling ~$2)

- hot dogs (check Yelp for suggestions; Grays Papaya, Nathan's...)

- Kat'z Delicatessen (hot pastrami sandwich can be split between two girls!)

For a lack of better title, the "Jewelry Mesh" refers to my hand made jewelry holder... particularly for my collection of earrings. I got around to finally making a diagram on how I made it, and actually taking a picture of my frame. Feel free to use the directions to make your own, or to improve on it. Have fun crafting!
